User Roles define the access privileges that Users have to the various types of objects found within the program (i.e. Line Sections, Line Section Equipment, Voltages, ...).
The names of the User Roles are defined by your System/Network Administrator and must match a corresponding User Group within your local area network (LAN). A User Group can be either a Windows® Active Directory Group or a local User Group. It is the responsibility of your System/Network Administrator to establish the Windows® User Groups, their names and their members. Group members are defined as those Windows® users that can logon to your computer or a computer within your LAN. It is also the responsibilty of your Database Administrator to grant access to the program's underlying SQL Server database and its associate stored procedures.
For example:
User Role Name | Active Directory Group Name | Group Members |
---|---|---|
Thermal Ratings Administrators | Thermal Ratings Administrators | Doug |
Thermal Ratings Transmission - Administrators | Thermal Ratings Transmission - Administrators | Tom |
Thermal Ratings Transmission - Users | Thermal Ratings Transmission - Users |
Linda Ron Gene Anne |
Thermal Ratings Transmission - Guests | Thermal Ratings Transmission - Guests |
Susan Tony Frank Melanie |
Thermal Ratings Distribution - Guests | Thermal Ratings Distribution - Guests |

User Roles can be created, modified and deleted from the "User Roles" window.
To manage the list of known User Roles, use the 'User Roles...' menu item on the Application's main window.
You add User Roles by entering a unique name on the last/empty cell in the list of User Roles.
Once the Windows® User Groups are established and the Thermal Ratings "User Roles" are created you can define what type of actions each group of users will be allow to perform within the program.
Defining user privileges is done by simply 'checking' or 'unchecking' the checkboxes within the 'Privilege' grids on the User Roles window.
Some privileges relate to the supporting data (i.e. Voltages, Conductors) and as such are not specific to any 'Division'; while other privileges relate to data corresponding directly a 'Division'.
The gray cells within the 'Privilege' grid indicate that the associated action/privilege is not used within the program.
To gain access to actions that can be performed on a User Role record utilize the context menu that is accessible via clicking the right mouse button on the User Role, within the list, you wish to edit.
Only users with the 'Write' privilege are allowed to alter User Roles.
Only users with the 'Create' privilege are allowed to create new User Roles.
Only users with the 'Delete' privilege are allowed to delete User Roles. You MUST always have at least one User Role that has the ability
to 'Write' User Roles! If there are no users with this ability, then you will not be able to alter User Roles. If this happens then your database administrator
will need to manually reenter the 'Write' privilege on a User Role.
