When the user first opens the Thermal Ratings application, the Line Sections window is displayed. This window is where Line Sections, Substations and their associated Equipment are managed.

Line Sections

There are many aspects to the Line Sections window with which you interact:

Line Sections

Please see below for descriptions about each of the features noted in the above image.

Main menu

The Main Menu contains the menu items you will need to manage and navigate through the different features of the Application.

Search Text

You can enter text into the 'Search' text box to locate an item, within the treeview, whose name at least paritally matches the entered text.

State Filter

You can limit the number of Equipment Containers (Line Sections, Substations, ...) within the Treeview on the window by selected a State within the 'State Filter'. When a State is selected, then only those Equipment Containers assigned to that State are included in the Treeview. Setting the 'State Filter' to 'Filter' removes any filtering and all known Equipment Containers will be included/displayed in the Treeview.

Treeview of Line Sections and Substations

The treeview of Line Sections and Substations is the interface you use to locate, sort/order and gain access to Line Sections, Substations and Line Section Equipment Containers. To alter the sort order of these Containers you can drag n' drop the Containers. When dragging you will see either an outline region around an item, or see a horizontal line between items where you are allowed to drop. Dropping on an item will move the item you are dragging and add it to the list of items Contained by the item on which you dropped. Dropping on a horizontal line between items will move the item from where it currently resides and insert it where the horizontal line is displayed. I.E. you can re-order Line Sections.

The example below will move the '101 Redding - Red Bluff (230kV)' line section and insert it between the 'NV Line (115kV)' and the 'NV to SDG&E Line (115kV)' line sections.

Drag n' Drop example

Line Sections can be created, modified and deleted using the Treeview list of Line Sections and Substations.

There are two ways to create a new Line Section:

  1. Use the 'Insert' menu item on the Treeview's context menu
Line Section Context Menu - Insert

Using the 'Insert' menu a new Line Section will be created and inserted immediately prior to the currently selected Line Section.

  2. Use the 'New' menu item on the Treeview's context menu associated with the 'Line' Category.
Line Section Category Context Menu - New

Using the 'New' menu a new Line Section will be created and appended to the end of the current list of known Line Sections within the corresponding Division.

You can edit a Line Section's properties via the 'Edit' menu item on the Treeview's context menu.

Line Section Context Menu

You can run the Reports from the Treeview's context menu.

Line Section Context Menu - Reports

For information about the different reports see the Reports help page.

You use the clipboard to 'Cut', 'Copy' and 'Paste' Equipment Containers. When doing so all of the Equipment, and their specifications, are also copied to/from the clipboard.

You use the 'Delete' menu item on the Treeview's context menu to delete an Equipment Container. When you delete an Equipment Container all the contained Equipment is also deleted.
Warning: The Application does not support an 'Undo' capability, so please use caution when using the 'Delete' functionality.

There is a checkbox entitled 'Use Precalculated values' within this section. If you wish to override the calculated values, you can check this box and then enter the pre-calculated value you have for each Action Level. For Equipment Types that, by default, require pre-calculated values this checkbox is not visible and you simply enter the Action Level values.

Use pre-calculated values

The 'Nomenclature' field is included for reference and future enhancements. It is not currently required and is not used in any reports.

Display Parameters

The display parameters area of the window allows you to customize how you want the data associated with the Line Sections, Substations and Equipment displayed:

  • Units:
    • You can display the thermal ratings of the Equipment and the Equipment Container in either: 'Amps' or 'MVA'.
    • You can display the Resistance, Reactance and Susceptance values associated with the Equipment Container in either: 'Per Unit' or 'Percent'.
    • You can select from a variety of user definable ambient values (temperature, wind speed) to use when calculating the thermal ratings of the Equipment (Parameter Set).
    • You can see what the state of the Equipment Container was, is or will be as of a specific date. Changing the date in this date control recalculates the limiting factors for the selected Equipment Container. It takes into account whether or not each piece of contained Equipment is in-service on the selected date. If a piece of Equipment is not in-service, then it is not a viable candidate to be a Limiting Factor for the selected Container (i.e. Line Section, Substation).
      As of date control
    • You can hide Equipment, within the list of contained Equipment, that is no longer in service; whose 'Out-of-Service' date is prior to the date displayed in the 'Calculate Limiting Factors as of' date control. Equipment that does not have a specific In-Service date is considered to be in service unless there is a specific/overriding Out-of-Service date.
